HI Worried Mother,
Thank you for asking! Children having difficulties of establishing social relationships can be due to "simple shyness", "autistic traits", or "social phobia". It is important to differentiate them by professional people. General encouragement is useful, but sometimes parents do not aware that they have been overprotective. Psychological treatment for children are usually carried out in forms of "playing", and they can improve from the deeper level.

HI KP,
Thank you for asking! There are something called "impulse control disorders", for example, gambling, shopping, and stealing. Although personality factors are also important, they can still be helped out with appropriate medication and psychological therapies. There are always reasons under behaviours, right? Therefor please don't hesitate to seek professional help.

Dear Dr.Chan My son is a teenager and talks very little w/people except us as his parents. He explains that he scared to talk w/others and I can see that he doesn't have any eye-contact or even escape to look thru' others attention when he really wants to talk to that person. I've tried to make chances to send him buying snacks and placing orders in the restaurants. How am I as a mom to help him to break his ice and so that he can have more fun to stay with his peers more......Thank you....

Dear Dr. Chan, My brother has been having problems controlling and restricting himself ever since he was small. And he is a big liar. Whenever he did something wrong or he did something that he knew we wouldn't like, he would lie. For example, he would steal money from us and pretended very well that nothing has happened ; he would drop out of classes and pretended to go school everyday in front of us...etc. As time goes by, we have found out that he actually has difficulties to get himself in control. It was not the first time he stole our money and we could all tell that he has been trying so hard to change himself. However, he failed every time to do so whenever he knew where the money was. He sincerely promised me he would try to work harder for school two months ago but after a while, he lost controls again. Our dad used to have problems of keeping controls from gambling. I am worried that my brother may be inherited from dad's "lost of controls" problems. Do you think that could be consider as mental problems too? Is there anything you can advise us to do? Best regards, KP

Hi May,
Thank you for asking. "Major" depression is just a group name to mark for a depressive syndrome but not just some minor unhappiness. "Moderate" depression means the dpression is in a moderate severity. Although there is no simple line between mild/moderate/severe, moderate depression is often called when there is significant loss of daily function or remarkable physical or somatic features.

HI David,
Thank you for asking!
I think you can search a lot of information about "schizophrenia" on the internet. It may take me hours or even months to explain it to you, so I do not wish to bore the other readers...^^"
In HK, doctors are using both ICD and DSM systems. For most of common mental illnesses, they are inter-chageable.

HI May,
Thank you for asking. Schizophrenia is a group of illness having different chances of recovery. Therefore different people might have a different course of illness. It is good to take a longer duration of medicine to prevent relapse, but the duration really depends on the clinical picture of your illness and the drug, and other social factors. Please take patience to discuss your concern with your doctor, and wish you a good recovery very soon.
